Mark Groves adds a wicket keeper to the list of burblers and was famous once for his B.L.H. (big left hand)- snaffler of catches off bowlers who'd managed to stray a little down the leg side. No one remembers many left handers falling victim to the famous appendage.

"Grov" would be happy to admit that the bulk of his cricket career is now behind him although he does still manage to open the innings in an annual 2.30 start match and reach the pub before old fashioned closing time.

Behind him too are days following Watford FC around Europe using a T-shirt as a map and knowing only sufficient German to order beers (other languages were less completely mastered). His navigation is now also impeded by a Satellite Navigation system that has twice recently taken playing colleagues from pub to ground via a huge peleton of amateur cyclists on very narrow country lanes.

He will bring a west country view from Wiltshire where he counts the pennies of a member of the aristocracy in his country pile and makes sure that the tenants of his master's pubs do not become impecunious.

Favourite cricketing memory:

"My Test victim at The Mote about 15 years ago when I was keeping wicket on tour - David Gilbert c Groves b Walter. The other memory was after seeing a youngster score a century against us for Dover and telling him that he would never be a good batsman unless he cut out some of the slogging shots that he played. Six months later he was opening the batting for Australia against West Indies and it was Justin Langer."
