THE CRICKET BURBLE TEAM

David Marshall

David is a top order batsman who tends to make run scoring look a little more difficult than it ought to be, mixing plays and misses with his signature shot, the nudge to mid wicket for one. He used to fancy himself as a part time left arm trundler, but has recently turned his attention to keeping wicket. The reasons for this change were two-fold: overuse and poor technique have rendered his throwing arm useless; and noticing a lack of keepers in the club, it was thought to be a good career move to justify a spot in the team.

He plays for the Keira Lions in the Illawarra Cricket Association competition in NSW Australia and has spent the majority of his career up and down between the first and second teams depending on the strength of the club at any point in time. Having just turned thirty however, he realises opportunities in the firsts will not come as regularly.

David spent a thoroughly enjoyable, but largely unsuccessful season in England where he was fortunate enough to play under the astute captaincy of fellow Cricket Burbler Ed Lamb. Though runs proved as elusive as ever during this season, valuable friendships were forged over several pints, which after all was kind of the point of the trip.

Away from cricket David works nights in a Security Control Room in a Sydney office building. The very nature of this job gives him ample time to think about the wonderful game of cricket, and how to solve all its problems. When not at work he enjoys a quiet schooner (a little smaller than a pint) or three with friends. Until now, this has been his only outlet to let his opinions be heard.

Favourite cricketing memory:

"Well I was at the SCG the day Steve Waugh spanked Richard Dawson through cover point to bring up his ton on the last ball of the day in 2002/03. That was magic stuff, the whole place erupted, even the Barmy Army. This may have been pipped though at the end of the last Aussie summer. I captained our second grade side to an undefeated premiership, hitting the winning runs and being named player of the final capped off my own perfect day. "
